Today my dad found an injured robin on the ground. It was limping and it couldn't fly. He brought the robin in the kitchen to protect it. My dog Karma was trying to sniff the robin, so my dad put it in a box with holes. We took the robin to an animal hospital, where I met a parrot that could copy words I said! Unfortunately, they had to euthanize the robin. I wonder how it got injured?
Today I went to Belle Isle Salt Marsh for aquarium class. First I went to an observation tower. I saw Tree Swallows and some Barn Swallows too. Then on the way to the mud I saw a Northern Mockingbird, he was imitating all kinds of sounds. When I got into the mud I realized that it was like quicksand because I sank very quickly. People’s shoes got stuck in the mud. One person found a horseshoe crab molt. Other people found hermit crabs deep in the mud. And other people found jellyfish and picked them up, because they couldn’t sting. The teachers also searched for snails. I got mud all over me! But some people were even muddier than I was. It was a fun trip.
The snow has finally melted so I asked my Dad if we could go outside and clean up all of the garbage that had been hidden in the snow piles. He said sure so I put on some rubber gloves, grabbed a trash bag and went to work. I picked up a full bag of garbage! I think it made the birds happy, because after I cleaned up, I spotted 11 different types of birds, including a rafter of turkeys!
On Saturday, I went to an art class at Ipswich. I learned about animal tracks and painted a picture of a Red Fox and its tracks. I used watercolors and some glitter to make the picture. At the end of class I got to see tracks in the snow. When class was done I fed some birds from my hand again.
I went to Ipswich today for an art class. The best part of my class was when I got to feed wild birds. I fed them seed right out of my hand! I was thrilled when the first bird landed on my hand, but I stayed very still because I wanted more birds to come. Each time a bird flew to my hand I smiled. I fed black-capped chickadees, tufted titmice, and a white-breasted nuthatch! I was surprised when the white-breasted nuthatch landed on my hand. I usually only see them standing upside down on trees. I enjoyed feeding all of the different types of birds and didn’t want to stop when it was time to go. I was so exhilarated that I skipped and hopped all the way back to the barn.
I have been enjoying watching birds, so I painted a bird feeder for my backyard. I can see it from the window box. I hope a lot of birds come to my feeder. Birds are my favorite type of animal!
